A gorgeous album that received an initial release last year but now on a deluxe double LP, this is a conceptualised soundtrack album for an imaginary film by the Japanese singer-songwriter that floats and ripples with delicate instrumentation and her beautifully gentle voice. Alongside TV composer and producer Taro Umebayashi, it features soft orchestral strings, twittering woodwinds and pitched percussion that captures some wondrous landscape, and lead single Porcelain was inspired by a trip to the Kerama Islands to evoke its weather conditions. Pilgrimage is particularly delicate song, while Horo is stark, with soft accordion drones alongside Ichiko’s ghostly voice. Parfum d’étoiles, with Umebayashi on piano, recorded so the hammers are audible, also features distant birdsong. Every one of the 14 tracks is an intimate, gentle unfurling of beautiful wonder. Out on Ba Da Bing! Records / hermine.
