A catchily eclectic debut by the singer-songwriter drawing on his Nigerian heritage, his adolescence absorbing hip hop and new wave in New York, the techno scene in Berlin, and now disco, punk and electronica in his London base. So his influences include Nick Cave to Stevie Nicks, Sleaford Mods to Fela Kuti, and as shown in his splendid first single from the LP, Black Wagon, and a previous Song of the Day, a touch of New Order with help from producers Al Doyle and Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. All of the above and more is here, from the New Wave electro-pop of openers Draggin’ On and Thought Leader, and Nature’s Curse, before morphing into a dark soul-trip-hop number on Better Days, some garage rock on The Well, plinky electro-pop on Got An Idea, while Nuclear Family has echoes of Gary Numan, and closing track Temp Worker is more post-punk reminiscent of Suicide. A healthy mix of influences and imaginatively escaping the industry pigeonholing of black urban artist. Out on Memphis Industries.
