Saccharine 70s sentimental indulgence in a country style, or a celebration of brilliant songwriting? Possibly both, but undeniably, and more particularly the latter, showcasing with a variety of guest singers alongside surviving brother Barry, the sublime chord changes and melodies of those very talented Gibb brothers. Arguably you could just listen to a Bee Gees greatest hits album to get the same joy, but this is loosely a country version collection, featuring some of its biggest stars as guests, and recorded in Nashville with producer Dave Cobb, best known for his work with Jason Isbell who is among them. It could have been far more adventurous, but there are some fine performances here alongside Gibb's classic breathy delivery, particularly a very strong voiced Brandi Carlile Run To Me, Alison Krauss on Too Much Heaven, I've Gotta Message To You with Keith Urban and Dolly Parton's part on Words. Many of the renditions here subtly piano-led with added orchestration, and most are big hits aside from Too Much Heaven and Words of a Fool. It will be interesting to see what further balladic material might come out in the the next volume of Greenfields and if there are lesser known gems better brought out in a new style. Out on EMI.
