With elements of krautrock, and echoes of Mogwai and Radiohead, the Hull experimental rock quartet’s second album has a dark, yet uplifting, mesmeric momentum, moving between stormy guitar ferocity, to wistful shoegaze and meditative electronica. Pulling Stitches for example, even has some My Bloody Valentine, dreamlike wooziness combined with a classic Stone Roses rhythmic shuffle. After the ethereal opener, Alps, Be Careful clicks in confidently with a dark, Radiohead reverb guitar. Just A Bit Of Blood feels thunderously Mogwai (on whose label they are again released) and also has of that ghostly Thom Yorke-style vocal. Advertisement One meanwhile builds slowly and beautifully with piano and birdsong, and Hidden Camera has a lovely offbeat rhythm and a gliding bass line with a sprinkle of electronica. On opener Alps Ryan Smith sings “We are forever moving backwards / it seems that there’s no hope. But then on It’s Just A Bit Of Blood: “Now that we have finally found ourselves/I hope we can become something else.” So in this follow-up to 2020’s debut album Bedroom, despite the second album’s title, it feels the band are, despite certain adjustments, settling on a sound, and building on that breakthrough release to move forward. Out on Rock Action Records.
