After a 15 year gap, the Nashville punk rockers fronted by the charismatic Jemina Pearl, return with a fresh, frank, punchy set of songs in which, as she puts it: “Mommy is the bitch in charge, the one in control. It’s a reclamation of myself.” It’s only their third LP since the self-titled debut in 2006 and 2008 follow-up Get Awkward, but in these angry, chaotic times seem very much ripe for their style of punk again, especially after they were asked to support Jack White on tour (on whose label they are also published) with the success of other bands such as Amyl and the Sniffers. Opener Worship The Whip sets the pace expands on that idea of Mommy taking control, and in addition, as she sings on Goodtime!: “I’ve got two kids and a mortgage! What the fuck? I don’t want to be left behind / When everyone else is having a good time.” Getting back to the lifestyle is hard to resist. So this is fun, energetic release, Pearl’s voice ringing out over the crunchy guitars. Other standouts including Bad Moon Rising, the searing feedback of Never Again, plus Pleasure Seeker and Hand Grenade (“I’m a survivor! I’m not some casualty, I set myself free!”). Explosive, energetic, full-throated fun, and at their very best, seen live. Out on Third Man Records.
