Salford’s Shaun Ryder and Manchester’s Paul ‘Kermit’ Leveridge return with their first LP since 2017’s Pop Voodoo, and their fourth overall together, with an especially funk-filled laced with their classic banter, wit and talent for cleverly daft, surreal and addictive lyrics. As well that distinctive funk, hip-hop and reggae combination, they also draw on a variety of other styles, including 70s soul (Quincy), spaghetti western (In The Ground, as well as Sex on The Beach) and spicy Latin grooves, such as on Button Eyes. The singles Milk and Pimp Wars are two particular standouts, recalling their bounce and energy of the first two albums and the lyrics and sizzle with the surreal and drug references. “I find it funny that I can’t sing… I’m alive!” announces Ryder on Button Eyes. “Are you not entertained?” we hear on Pimp Wars. Most certainly we are, but even more so, the pair even more entertaining live, mischievious, constantly sparking and sparring with mutual digs and jokes, these addiction survivors great grooves are from an absolutely brilliant backing band. Not quite to the level as the first two Black Grape albums after the end of Happy Mondays, but arguably it’s still the better of Ryder’s main projects. Out on DGAFF Recordings.
