The New York trio of Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace return with their 10th but first album together for nine years, one about the inescapable struggles of adulthood: communication breakdown in enduring relationships and trying to hold onto your dreams. Despite many dark, melancholy, double-edged lyrics, there’s an easygoing, breezy, west coast feel their acoustic guitar and synth folk-alt-rock style, such as on opener Snowman, Not For Me, or I Thought You Should Know. But the band’s oddball, ghostly allure comes to the fore more when Makino takes the lead vocals on track such as Kiss Her Kiss Her, Before, or her wordless incantations on the dream-like closing track Via Savona. Rest of Her Life is a beautifully poignant number with distant birdsong, and as well as standout track and former Song of the Day Melody Experiment, the centre-point of the album is the title track with Parts 1 and 2, strangely mystical and impressionist. Out on section1.
