A striking post-punk debut of lo-fi, spiky guitar sounds and abstract, strangely alluring disharmony by the French, Rouen-based quintet fronted by guitarist and vocalist Vincent Fevrier. Very much in a tradition of arrhythmic arrest, atonality and alternative tunings, one pioneered by the likes of Edinburgh’s The Fire Engines and various Manchester bands, reborn a few years ago in the shape of DUDS, this was recorded in a fresh, rough and ready style in a Normandy studio. Lead single Brand New Storm is the most immediate and tuneful, but other highlights include the even more experimental, off-kilter Ribbon Road, led by two basses, two drums and the band’s usual triple-guitar combination, in unison with saxophones recorded in collaboration with Levi Gillis, and inspired by the famous Mario Kart track. Erase U, Excommunicated, Public Transport and the rather beautiful jangles (and a little bit reminiscent of early Pink Floyd) of closer The Goose. Short and snappy with 11 tracks at a little under 32 minutes, it’s a potent, dazzlingly different debut. Out on Bad Vibrations.
