The Primal Scream frontman and former Savages singer collaborate in an unusually mellow set of heartbreak numbers that recall the country rock duos between Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. That comparison particularly comes to the fore on Your Heart Will Always Be Broken and opener Chase It Down is a strong piece southern soul and Sunk In Revery a pleasing simple acoustic song. Marriages fall apart, despair and disappointment reveals, passions flare. At times the lyrics can be a little self-absorbe cheesy and cringeworthy from Gillespie (You Don’t Know What Love Is, You Can Trust Me Know, but that’s also the nature of the genre. Beth, aka Camille Berthomier is a potent presence and it would be good to hear her taking the lead more over Gillespie, but overall this is simmering, strong release. Out on Sony.
