The Alabama Shakes singer and guitarist returns with her second solo album after 2019’s superb debut, Jaimie, with an equally brilliant but wider scope of styles, from soul to funk, jazz, but also dancefloor energy, and more than a dash of Prince. That particularly comes to the fore on the vitality, rich vocal harmonies and sheer agility of Power to Undo or on Another Day. But this is an LP packed with other highlights - the simmering power and resonance of opener Earth Sign, the rhythm and dynamism of the title track with fabulous funk guitar and the sheer attack and range of her voice, the lingering melancholy but soaring soul of Red Flags, which also feels like Prince is reborn and highlights failure to spot danger signs in relationships. Then there’s the club dance energy of Prove It To You, and to close the gorgeous Every Color in Blue, featuring lovely, complementary trumpet by Rod McGaha, rippling keyboards, and the sharp guitar work of Howard with another passionate, powerful vocal performance. What now? Eclectic, electric, unusual instrumentation and production, and another an innovative, exuberant, excellent release. Out on Island Records.
