Dark, simmering, sensual, ghostly, goth-noir rock with restrained thundery rumblings by the California artist, in a powerfully effective, slow, atmospheric release that sounds like tears in a downpour, an echoey, innovative potion of metal melancholy. Wolfe has been around for a while now, hitting 40, and there’s a sense of the renewal, catharsis and cyclical rebirth for the self-proclaimed witch. Since 2021 she’s quit alcohol and this is now her seventh album, but first for Loma Vista Recordings. There’s a constant sense of restraint in sound, but also a confident one of vocal control through distortions of guitar, synths, drums and bass. Interestingly, in the same week that Beth Gibbons releases a single heralding a forthcoming solo album, Wolfe’s style, including on numbers such as Tunnel Lights, Dusk, or Salt, has definite echoes of 90s Portishead, not only in vocal delivery, but also that overall echoey, resonant, cinematic sound. A late-night listen, with other standouts including Everything Turns Blue, Whispers In The Echo Chamber and the strangely distant clatterings and beats of Eyes Like Nightshade. Dark music for dark times and feelings, and highly effective. Out on Loma Vista Recordings.
