Perfect for a relaxed Sunday evening listen, this laid back second LP by the guitarist from Big Thief makes a good companion piece with 2020’s albums by his band’s singer Adrianne Lenker – Songs, and Instrumentals. Meek isn’t quite the adjective for this artist’s style, sounding, aside any subject in the lyrics, clearly quite confident and comfortable in his own skin. His style is sleepy but also very quietly sharp, reminiscent of Kurt Vile as well as the band Clem Snide. The album was recorded in a heatwave in New Orleans not far from the Mississippi, which must certainly add to its feel, Meek’s singing voice certainly not strong, but certainly charming, witty, and wry, aided by Mat Davidson on pedal steel guitar, and organ played by Meek’s brother Dylan.
The first word and title on Two Saviors is “pareidolia”, not often found in lyrics, but beautiful sounding, and in it meaning the state of recognising shapes where none were intended to exist – like searching for images in the clouds. The overall tone of the album is quietly melancholic, cathartic, naked candlelight confessions of heartbreak, resiliency, and enchantment. Other standout tracks include Candle, Two Moons, Dream Daughter and Halo Light, but all 11 tracks are consistent in quality and feeling. Out on Keeled Scales.
