After the swaggering playful rock of 2020’s Superstar, the sassy New York singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist returns with a fifth LP of inspirational, but more sensual, introspective, experimental pop. That said, one of the standouts here is the single Tell Me What You Want, one that builds into a fabulous fuzz-guitar indie-rock belter. But there’s much more to this album, evident from the sensual harp and guitar sweeps of mature, experimental opener and previous Song of the Day Love/Lover/Friend, a song that muses on these multiple roles in a relationship, and swells into beautiful, emotional orchestrations and sampled loops. Miami dynamically moves between passionate, restless rock-pop and delicate acoustic sensuality in another wrestle with feelings towards another, pointing to the “art of loving” and the titular “this is the art of forgetting how”. The Doldrums is a gentler, softer sheen of a track with orchestral strings and piano, as well as another standout, Love Song By Myself, and the smoky number The Kiss. Filled with longing and heartbreak, there are three intermission tracks featuring fond voicemails from her grandmother. Eclectic, passionate, creative and sensual, a name to remember. Out on New West Records.
