Superbly smoky, soulful, sensual, richly woozy and also insightful new work about relationships by the Toronto singer-songwriter in this follow-up to 2021’s excellent Alpha album. That strong, smooth deep voice, melting into smooth harmonising and blends with muted bass and taut guitar parts and piano, emotes with gentle, potent soupy power. Standouts include opener My Way, Dovetail, the shimmeringly ghostly New Day, the heartwrenching I Don’t Love You and particularly Canopy, but the entire album captures a slow, strong simmering sensuality. There’s more of a distorted R&B effect and flavour to Forever, featuring Snoh Aalegra, which deviates a little from the rest, but doesn’t change the overall effect of this mature, quietly emotional release. Out on Stone Woman Music and also her debut on XL Recordings.
