Nic Offer and the Sacramento dance-punk band return with their ninth, but while they remain one of the best live acts around, this LP offers their bigger range of styles from acoustic to electronic, house, fun to Latin. Opener Normal People could make listeners wonder if they are even hearing the correct record, this gently beautiful, melancholy acoustic guitar number sounding something akin to Elliott Smith. But then as the album progresses, one written during lockdown over the past two years, it is an imagining of getting back into future clubs - A Little Bit (More) gradually moves into deep funk, Storm Around The World with Mario Uzor is more electro-pop, Panama Canal and This is Pop 2 are more minimal electro-funk, Un Puente is high-octane Latin pop, Here’s What I Need To Know a spacey electronic dance number, then the album settles into a stripped back bouncy funk, especially on Let It Be Blue, while It’s Grey, It’s Grey is reminiscent of late-70s Sparks. Fun, experimental and surprising at times, and no doubt highly entertaining as they return to live shows. Out on Warp.
