Second album by the much lauded Mercury-winning David Omoregie for his first, Psychodrama, shows his talent for diversity of rap styles through social commentary and relationship themes, comprising R&B, Afrobeat, gospel, electronica and thoughtful, piano-led melancholy. With the title echoing but inverting the shallow, hypocritical soundbite of former Prime Minister David Cameron, social commentary appears again in this Dave’s armoury, but there’s much more here. This may be in part for the variety of guests on his record as performer and producers, including a certain high-profile James Blake, who appears on Both Sides Of A Smile. Dave clearly feels relaxed enough to let his many guest performers have their moment, not least with Stormzy on the atypical Clash, but also indie-electronic duo Mount Kimbie, as well as Ghetts, Giggs, Fredo and Manchester rapper Meekz spitting words, alongside female vocalists including R&B singer Snoh Aalegra on the eerie Law of Attraction and rapper ShaSimone. Other standouts include Three Rivers, which chronicles the experiences of various generations of immigrants to this country – Windrush, eastern European, Middle Eastern, and harks to Dave’s Nigerian roots a sign that greater diversity is to come from him in the future. Out on Neighbourhood Records.
