With a suite of exquisite sounds from flutes to the soft thunk of bass and ethereal vocals, the second album by Laura Marling and Tunng’s Mike Lindsay is a little more stripped back than the first, but still brings otherworldly beauty. Their collaboration brings together different sides of the folk spectrum into its own unique form, interweaving Lindsay’s compositions and production skills at his Margate studio with Marling’s strange, alluring, sometimes impenetrable lyrics, that sometimes jump from the dreamy to the explicit. The most recognisable from other work is the title track, which could also be a Tunng folktronica classic. We Cannot Resist is another standout - catchy pop-folk, but still with a special surreal Lump aura. Openers Bloom At Night and Gamma Ray set the tone of the album but it develops in all sorts of surprising ways - Climb Every Wall is a restless venting of frustrations, Red Snakes is has lovely, slow rumbling stillness, Paradise thrums with a very strong melody, instrumental Hair On The Pillow is a strange, chiming beauty, and closing track Phantom Limb is a terrific psychedelic trip. Envelopes are constantly pushed and opened into delightful new musical worlds. Out on Chrysalis / Partisan.
