This fifth LP by the fluid rapper from Florida harks back to an older, more mellow period of hip hop - smoother, jazzier, and subtler, with his gruff RZA-style voice making clever rhymes with an outstanding guest list, from Robert Glasper to Saul Williams. That includes Melt Session #1 with Glasper, Mental, with Williams and Bridget Perez, inventive looping on X Wing, Troubles with T-Pain, the western style Walkin, and the entertaining anime-inspired Zatoichi, with Slowthai on backing whoops, the slick, compact line inspired by the film: “I’m Zatoichi leading the blind / Pressure get applied”. Less persona-based, it’s his best since 2018’s Ta13oo, and seems to the most mature and honest to date. Out on Loma Vista Recordings.
