Full of surprises and changeability, a truly alternative, at times eccentric, meta-lyrical but also powerful new album by the Canadian rock band fronted by Dan Bejar, mixing everything from ambient, techno, spoken word and rock. That said, looking back at any of their previous albums, such as 2020’s Have We Met, then there funk, 80s pop and more are bound to feature. From the slow but emotional build of It’s In Your Heart Now to the industrial techno-rock-pop of Suffer, to the extraordinarily arrhythmic vocals of funk-jazz piece June, you can never quite know what to expect on this eclectic release. Dance album? Only fleetingly. But embracing the eccentricity is the way step forward, from the lovely melody of All My Pretty Dresses, the avant-garde Tintoretto, It’s For You, the ambient minimalism of the title track, to the catchy Eat The Wine, Drink the Bread, which was previously a Song fo the Day, all the way to final numbers The States and The Last Song, in which the music is stripped back to quizzical lyrics and engaging melody. Out on Bella Union.
