The singer and African queer artist icon from Durban and founder of the FAKA collective offers something truly different with this startling LP mixing operatic voice, disco and alternative, experimental electronica with Zulu language. We’ve previously highlighted the outstanding disco single Tavern Queen on Song of the Day, but there’s also plenty of ear-catching material here to enjoy with South African and other guest artists including Sanele Ngubane, Pasja Sneijder, Nonku Phiri, Hlasko, Simon Wolfson, Gabriel Wolfson, and Gyre. Zibuyile Isimakade truly kicks the album off with a strange swell of whistles, beats and electronica. You Think I’m Horny is the other single and a trippy piece of soulful exploration, Thokozani is a mesmerising mix of cross-rhythm and voice, The Void a disturbing combination of growls and screams, Uncle Kenny a ghostly but strangely beautiful piece of singing (“I cry an ocean of empty smiles”) and Studies in Black Trauma is an explosive fusion of African voices and electronica that marries the nightmarish with the awestruck. Truly alternative, brilliantly groundbreaking, and filled with fresh sounds and surprises on each listen. Out on Mute.
