Packed with tender lo-fi to full-on rock numbers, the distinctive voice and playing of J Mascis, joined Lou Barlow’s bass and Murph on drum, rolls out in the form of a very fine new and consistent LP, their first together for five years. Sweep It Into Space doesn’t offer any big surprises, but oodles of quality songwriting and dependability. Take It Back (with mellotron no less), I Ran Away (super catchy) and Garden (slow and sensitive) are among three gems that sparkle, opener I Ain’t harks back to classic shoegaze, but I Met The Stones uses the heavy rock formula almost too much to the letter, particular with the full on shred solo, with on To Be Waiting or Walking To You could be straight from the late 80s too, but here there is also a beautiful throaty softness to J Mascis’s delivery. Like a vintage wine, it just keeps maturing, so why expect anything but the same? Out on Jagjaguwar.
