Originally released in August, and more recently as a sample-rich, funk-jazz-sourced Flipout label edit version, this third Mixtape by the American rapper Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon is fabulously feisty, filthy and packed with clever, witty wordplay. One of the slickest rappers around, there’s fireworks going off all over, such as the amusing back-and-forth of Denial Is A River, in which Doechii speeds up her voice as separate part to create a dialogue with her braggadocio self as a calm, self-therapist persona, ending in a rhythmic parody of wheezy breathing exercises. There’s much to enjoy here, from he dark, slow allure of the opener Stankapoo, the meaty bass line and almost comedic eroticism in the video for Bullfrog, the funky bass sax and ironic laughter of Boiled Peanuts, and a host of other tricks, clever trips and skits variously across jazz, R&B with agile cross-rhythms, such as on the smooth Wait. But perhaps best of all is a brilliantly slick, sex-greedy Nissan Altima, in which the “trap Grace Jones” explodes into a mesmeric whirl of fast, filthy wordplay. Restlessly full of surprises, the mixtape ends with a soulful title track of beautiful guitar and serene vocals. A mercurial talent bursting with entertainment. Out on Top Dawg Entertainment/Capitol Records/UMG. For the Flipout edit version, see also the other embedded links below.
