Stylish, catchy, charismatic, effervescent, uplifting, retro, Memphis soul, Americana and country by the singer-songwriter from Jackson, Tennessee whose distinctive, bright resonant voice has some echoes of Eartha Kitt and Macy Gray. This sixth album is designed as an antidote to the proliferation of bad news, and it’s certainly effective with opening track Joy, Joy!. With producer M Ward, guests also include Norah Jones and the Blind Boys of Alabama. Her voice has a squeaky, old-school innocence about it, a gentle warble, and the vocal overdubbing creates a sense of singing along with herself brings a certain charm, from second track All I Really Wanna Do, and embrace of nature in Endless Tree, while Trust The Path has a piano accompaniment embracing almost child-like vocal performance. Moving from the Motown-style or gospel-engersied numbers the 14 tracks range mostly between two and three minutes, develop into jaunty, simple, acoustic, such as Sweet Things Just For You, to the gentler and more the delicately performed, such as My Life Is A Country Song, to the final Love And Let Go, underlined a gentle blast of farewell brass. Overall, a charming balm to the soul, one designed to accentuate the positive, to celebrate growth, love and resilience. Out on Concord Records.
