This striking pop debut with a distinctly retro sound, at times evoking sounds of Janet Jackson and Prince, harking back to the late-70s and smooth sheen of the 80s mainstream, has been gestating for 13 years by this seasoned session musician who has variously worked with Maccabees, Jessie Ware, Sampha and Jai Paul. Largely self-produced, it sounds and feels effortless, but is obviously a long labour of love, and that’s not merely the theme of the lyrics. Standouts include the subtle, superb Shouda, Stay With Me Though The Night, Deeper, In The Fire and Can You Look In The Mirror? Fabiana is the daughter of the successful British session bassist Pino Palladino, and it’s clear she’s got similar class in your genes with a strong, clear vocal too. Sophisticated, smooth, slick, sometimes soaring but also understated, it’s one that gradually seeps into the toe-tapping subconscious. Out on Paul Institute / XL Recordings.
