Terrific debut by the Vermont singer-songwriter, guitarist and banjo player who draws influence from English, Irish and Scottish folk who has a talent for poignant lyrics, beautiful playing and a quiet, but striking voice. The album begins with a traditional – The Maid On The Shore, but the highlights are her own songs, such as alluring, ghostly Dorothy May, the tale of a woman who sleeps “on a pillow of salt brine”, as well as Hares On The Mountain, or Unmarked, which is one of several songs with very striking lines spoken by characters in the first person, such as “Don’t worry, don’t wait around / Just leave me in the ground,” she says, before telling us to “take off that winded skin”. Hairs literally are raised on the back of arms and neck at that one. Makes and good comparison with Scotland’s Kathryn Joseph. Stark, evocative, spooky and beautiful. Self-released.
