After various side and solo projects, Sunderland brothers Peter and David Brewis return with their very own inventive brand of classy, clever, quirky, and funky experimental pop. For two decades now, the multi-instrumentalists have inhabited and explored a distinct, and sometimes abstract area where indie, pop, jazz and funk intermingle, filled with unusual constructions, polyrhythms and synthy sounds, and this album continues to push that envelope, but still summoning some great melodies as well as plenty of the more cerebral stimulus and muso interest. The chorus on opener Six Weeks, Nine Days, for example, is glorious. The Guardian of Sleep is a lively handclap bouncy bass funk with wonky sounds and catchy syncopations and sax. The title track has an insistent repetitious one-note rhythm and flooding synth sounds. Other tracks of oddball interest include the XTC-ish Absolutely Negative, love song The Waitress of St Louis. Always fascinating and adventurous, it’s great to see them back. Out on Memphis Industries.
