Mischievously wry and marvellously inventive twinkling electro-pop in the third full album (and first in seven years) by the multi-instrumentalist and producer Benjamin Garrett who has also released multiple EPs and mixtapes. His style ranges from and electro-folk reminiscent of Tunng to light funk and AutoTune R&B to west coast seventies pop and a touch of Elton John. His wife Rae Morris also features on second track Moscow. God Melodies, with the title and opening standout track is “about the purity of how we receive musical ideas, when we make something from nothing”. As the lyrics tell us: “Has your life been reduced to perpetual emptiness? / Look in the mirror and check out those soul's eyes / Your devices have left you short-sighted / Been searching for meaning in all the wrong places. You're looking for God / I know where She lives / She's lurking in the melodies.” There is certainly a free-flowing right brain-hemisphere inspiration to his style, albeit wrapped in a polished piano pop package. Other standouts include 49, Pair of Dancers, I Won’t Hurry Love, and Lionel. There’s also a tongue-in-cheek musical self-interview below. Out on Fiction Records / Universal.
