Since their breakthrough Love and Hate In A Different Time EP in 2020, the trio of Ari Balouzian, Ryan Hope and most especially the voice of Jacob Lusk continue to soar, now with this new, short debut LP of transcendent, timeless soul and gospel. Whether, now their are better known, this album has quite the same magic of the EP and first singles that seemed to come out of nowhere, probably stronger overall than these seven, but the quality is still undeniable, and is clearly heralds a Part 2. Decorated with orchestral backing which harks back to another era, partly the 1940s jazz age, there is still something stropped back about their work, allowing Lusk’s extraordinary voice to shine. It’s a short album at roughly 30 minutes with those seven tracks. The opener, Angels & Queens, is more a nod to smooth 70s funk and soul, but it is the second, Taboo, where their signature sound takes off, with piano, brass and string bursts, and Lusk’s voice really is special. To The Moon And Back is another standout as is If Only You Knew. Produced by Sounwave, also at the control on with Kendrick Lamar’s latest LP. Out on Parlophone / Atlas.
