Meaty, strong new LP by the legendary Black Francis and co, a mischievous, punchy ode to absurdism, with a sound that harks to earlier material than the more polished more recent LPs, with some tracks sitting more in line with their classic 1987-91 era. This includes There’s A Moon On, and Vault of Heaven, songs which are as Pixies as you can get – the thrumming basslines of Paz Lenchantin, who now seems fully settled into the Pixies mould, interweaving around Joey Santiago’s guitars, and of course Francis’s devil-may-care, punchy delivery and beguilingly odd lyrics, such as: “Went to 7-Eleven/ To try and get me straight/ I ended up there in outer space” or Nomatterday’s “I’ll say I’m sorry in advance for all of my hyperbole”. Dregs of the Wine and Thunder and Lightning also jump out. Eight albums into total, four either side of the 1993-2003 breakup, and this may be the best of the second four at least. Out on BMG.
