With his trademark sci-fi dystopian sound, the electro-pop veteran, who has rekindled his career of late, returns with doom-laden concept album about climate change seen from the point of view of Earth itself. Numan’s last two albums Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind) and Savage (Songs From A Broken World) gained critical and commercial success he has not seen for many years, and this latest, inspired by a poem written by his 11-year-old daughter, takes an uncompromisingly serious tone about the state of of our planet. Key tracks are the sinister expansive sound of goth-electro opener Betrayed with a swirl of eastern flavours, the single I Am Screaming, the scratchily dark The Gift, the rasping Is This World Not Enough, the dark rocky goth feel of Saints and Liars, and as well as the brooding melancholy And It Breaks Me Again. Earth is given the voice of a wounded animal, a broken robot, and while the scale of the sound and production is impressive, and could certainly make an extraordinary cinematic live show, perhaps if there’s any criticism here, the album is a little thudding, long and repetitive, and Numan’s characteristic vocal electro yodel phrasing cryies out for a variety of tone, but if this sound has worked for over 40 years, why change now? Out on Numan Music.
