Cheeky, squeaky and quirky pop from the Japanese quartet of Mana, Kana, Yuuki, and Yuna from following their previous LPs Punk and Pink which were much more, punk, Wink has a theme of feeling uninhibited and free. Through the sugar-coated high voiced delivery, there a soulful, lounge feel to many of these tracks, sung in English, including opener Donuts Mind If I Do, and the slow, sensual, indulgent Maybe Chocolate Chips (with Ric Wilson), while ACTION has that sprightly restlessness of reminiscent of Scritti Politti. END is lively rap number, PING PONG!, a bouncing dance number, is unsurprisingly flavoured with old-school video game sounds, while IN PINK, featuring Mndsgn is smoother funk-jazz. Nobody Knows We Are Fun is a slower, eccentric chanting oddity, but clearly if there’s one thing Chai do, it is always undeniably and infectiously fun. Each song switches pace and style within the same high, breathy keyboard-led parameters, and throughout it’s playfully joyous work that grows on you rather than be being some short-span sugar high. Out on Sub Pop.
