A vibrant, energetic, wittily candid, jangly indie-garage-rock release about life’s many undulations and problems, particularly mental health issues, by the Australian quartet led by Kai James in their debut LP by Sub Pop. The songs seem to be taken directly from James’ life – personal, wistful, darkly humorous, his bright, jittery voice sometimes recalling the clarity of the Undertones’ Feargal Sharkey, and complementing the guitar of Jayden Williams with a sound and delivery that also echoes that of The Wedding Present with a touch of The Modern Lovers. So there are many enjoyable, lovely tunes here with a melancholy, self-deprecatory lyrical undertow, such as the punchy title track, Hello, Maple Jean and the Anthropocene, Mother, You’ll Be Alright, as well as the Intro and Outro numbers with a constantly engaging narrative. A breath of familiar, yet also fresh fresh air. Out on Sub Pop.
