A surprise sudden fourth LP by the Bristol trio of drummer Geoff Barrow (Portishead), bassist Billy Fuller, and Will Young (Moon Gangs) with that familiar chevron title and distinctly dark, strange but mesmeric post-rock-krautrock thrum. It’s all about momentum with this band, this release being no exception, with a slow buildup of church organ on the first track, Strawberry Hill, taking half of its eight minutes before emergence of drums, bass and then fuzzy keyboards. The Seal is more familiar Beak> territory, with those ghostly vocals and nimble bass riffs with almost air-raid sirens in the background. Windmill is a fabulously wonky, psychedelic track, and Hungry Are We is a delicate number that could have come out of a rippling early 70s prog era, while Bloody Miles evolves from eerie synths into a shuddering riff. But it’s perhaps on the funky momentum of Ah Yeh (perhaps to complement previous track Oh Know) where the sweet spot is to be found, a fantastic groove that builds and moves onwards in classic krautrock spirit. Oddball, but rewarding if you let it inhabit you. Out on Invada Records.
