Slow, inexorable, compelling beauty in the powerful voice of the Melbourne singer-songwriter and actor, here, following 2022’s extraordinary Storm Queen, with a less raw, more lavishly orchestrated sound and grandeur, to express themes such as grief and self-destruction and emotional violence. Adding to the richness and scope of the sound is producer Jonathan Wilson, who has also worked with Angel Olsen, Father John Misty. Folk, country, 70s piano pop and a comparable style to Scott Walker intertwine with a gliding vocal majesty on many outstanding tracks, including On and On, I’m Getting Married To The War, Everybody’s Someday, Romana, and A Precious Thing, with soars emotionally. Of that track, she says it “used to feature the screech of an eagle. We decided to take that part out and replace it with a Timpani.” A detail. Closing track Help Is On Its Way simplifies to a piano, and Cummings’ voice finds some grit as well as purity. Vocal presence reaching ever greater heights. Let it swoop all around you. Out on ATO.
