A truly outstanding voice and second album to match on this second LP by the Australian singer-songwriter and actress, her primal growl and guttural power combined with full-bodied ethereal purity in this gorgeous folk release, flavoured with elements of psychedelia and country. The rangy, rich vocal performance is everything here, filled with passion, anger and tenderness, complemented variously drum-free guitar, occasional piano, country-folk violin (Here Is The Rose) on the title track a growing sax, songs traversing religion, drugs, relationships, building on her 2019 album Refuge Cove, before which her cover of Bob Dylan’s It’s All Over Now Baby Blue caught the attention of King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard and label Flightless Birds, supporting Gizzard as well as Weyes Blood, Evan Dando and J Mascis on tour. Covid permitting is surely to soar into a her own spotlight with this album, with standout tracks from start to finish, but particularly opener Heaven, which is the kind of track to make you stop what you’re doing, and we profiled this and Up In Flames on Song of the Day just before Christmas. To explore her range and emotional power, see also Freak, Storm Queen, the Dylan-ish Up In Flames, and Dreams. Incomparable really, but imagine and voice somewhere between Janis Joplin, Jeff Buckley and Vashti Bunyan, and it might go halfway to capture it. Out on ATO Records/Sugar Mountain Records.
