Mellow, ethereal, and with Talk Talk as an musical influence, the former Maccabees frontman’s solo follow-up to A Quickening emanates carefree, floating joy with light funk-pop electronica and his high, soft vocal delivery. It is all very much inspired by having fatherhood and the joys of watching his child grow and change, and the gentle feel is constant. Big Skies Silly Faces, with backing vocals by Katy J Pearson, was previously a Song of the Day here last summer, but other standouts include Bigger, Look Who’s Talking Now with a characteristic soft, mellow bass and light keyboard line, Deep Down Way Out, and the gently bouncy carry-baby song Hey You Hop Up. Soft, but somehow not too saccharine, with production by Bullion, and contributions by Willie J Healey and Ben Reed, listening to the entire album feels warm and cosy, like reclining on a giant pillow. Out on Play It Again Sam.
