Third album by the Welsh artist, another almost entirely in the Cornish language, is an alluring mix of pop, ethereal psych-folk and electronica inspired by recent motherhood and the lockdown experience. It very much continues Gwenno Mererid Saunders’s previous LPs, the Welsh-language Y Dydd Olaf and 2018’s Cornish-language Le Kov, derived from that half of her heritage on her father’s side. Very much co-created with her multi-instrumentalist partner Rhys Edwards, every number is in Cornish part from the protest number NYCAW (Nid yw Cymru ar Werth – Wales is Not for Sale). Standouts include the title track, previous Song of the Day An Stevel Nowydh (The New Room), which includes the chorus lyric “A yw'r gwacter ystyr yn rhan anochel o fod yn fyw?” (“Is the total lack of meaning an inevitable part of being?”). Ardamm, and Anima. Each is accompanied by quirky videos often using 8mm film in collaboration with Anglesey-based filmmaker and photographer Clare Marie Bailey.. Charming, strange, oddly humorous and original, and very much of interest to fans of Gruff Rhys and Cate Le Bon. Out on Heavenly Recordings
