The Berlin-based Polish singer, pianist and composer returns with her bewitching voice, elevating, ethereal, minimalistic, ambient electronica and classical, with guests Patrick Watson, Ólafur Arnalds and Duncan Bellamy of Portico Quartet. Inspired in part by Rani’s two-month residency in a small studio in Switzerland’s mountains, where working soundtrack for On Giacometti, a documentary about the renowned Swiss artist. “Where I stayed was once an old sanatorium in an area which used to be very popular, but now there are huge abandoned hotels where the locals say ghosts live.”
This resides in the nature of the music. The single Hello, for example, feels like two pieces superimposed on each other, one fainter but still present. Other exquisite standouts include Whispering House (with Ólafur Arnalds), Don’t Break My Heart (with Duncan Bellamy), Dancing With Ghosts (with Patrick Watson), the mesmeric electronica of 24:03, the rippling power of A Day In Never, Moans, Thin Line, and the 11-minute epic Komeda, but really the entire album truly is a work of haunting beauty. Out on Gondwana Records.
