Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville return after 2019’s excellent Emotional Education with more clever, quick-witted, crisp, feminist indie pop unpicking the deep-seated problems of relationships, social control, society and self-loathing. Much of the album, like the last, details the internal and external minutiae that repress women in relationships and beyond, from Cross Yourself to CBB To Be Sad (“Well, I hate myself
I hate that I’m sitting on top of your body thinking ’bout someone else”, Obsessed, and Embarrassed. Knocked Up shows relief at not reaching a state of pregnancy despite many opportunities. This is lush, synth and guitar indie pop. Midland’s Guilt is a slow, mournful Autotune number revealing Somerville’s feelings about leaving her home town of Tamworth, and the guilt of losing her accent. But perhaps the standout is Bored, which cleverly lists a series of frustrations: “I'm bored of the gaslighting, the truth you're hiding
I'm bored of the lunch you eat / I'm bored of the clones and I'm bored of the music I'm bored of my phone and the way that I use it …” Independently released by IDER.
