With a classic sound and rolling back the years, sublime high-voiced retro-soul Motown in the mould of Marvin Gaye, but all new by the New York singer who settled in Liverpool a decade ago to study at the Institute for Performing Arts. Another superb Daptone release following those by the likes of Sharon Jones, the Dap-Tones, and Charles Bradley. Fresh material, but down to instrumentation and production, just like travelling in a time machine back to somewhere between 1965 and 1975. If it’s already a perfect sound, why try and fix it? Standouts include the title track, If You Don’t Want My Love, Lost, That’s All I Wanted From You, and Give Me Another Day. What a stunning debut. Out on Daptone Records.
