Another vibrant new project by the illustriously creative tenor saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings of Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors, with a potent mix of jazz, spoken word and hip-hop and a stellar lineup. The name Kofi Flexxx is not person, but a creative principle, a collective work by Shabaka and friends, including the profound, eloquent proclamations of poet Anthony Joseph on the standout By Now (Accused of Magic), joining the fluidly creative band of drummer Jas Kayser, bassist Daisy George, Alex Hawkins on rippling piano, Ross Harris on flute. New York rapper Billy Woods is more hard-hitting on the dark, swirling opener Apothecary, or the highly percussive and flute interspersed Flowers In The Dark featuring Confucius MC, or contrasting again, Aim, with South African vocalist Siyabonga Mthembu making impressionistic low-key intonations around the music. Highly inventive throughout, there are also strong instrumental tracks, such as the energetic It Was All A Dream, to the slower but stirring closer, Fire. Out on Native Rebel Recordings.
