The classic British shoegaze band of the 1990s return again after 2017’s self-titled comeback, resurgent with a new and old audience, blending dream-pop haze with resonant, atmospheric, noise-guitar textures. This is not an album for lyrics, which are repetitive, slow and slightly indecipherable in the gentle voices of Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead, but in atmosphere, tone and musical build, sometimes haunting, sepulchral, at other times a controlled frenzy, from opener Shanty to Prayer Remembered, Chained to a Cloud and Kisses to closer The Slab to name six of the eight tracks. A release which feels like a polished piece of spontaneous experimentalism, with high production values, and, just as the band’s name always suggests, one to immerse yourself into to immerse from start to finish. Out on Dead Oceans.
