An exquisite debut by the Los Angeles-based Icelandic-Chinese jazz-pop artist, whose pure voice, alongside mostly acoustic guitar or piano backing, brings a timeless collection of gentle, old-school, charming, candid, singer-songwriter love songs reminiscent of Karen Carpenter to Peggy Lee. Laufey Lin’s numbers sometimes lean towards gentle bossa nova rhythms, such as on opener Fragile, or later, Falling Behind. Other standouts include Beautiful Stranger, the vivid recollections of living Above The Chinese Restaurant, the leaf-drop delicacy of Dear Soulmate. What Love Will Do To You, and Just Like Chet, a nod to a number performed by great singer and trumpeter Chet Baker, seem like classic jazz standards, but her her own compositions. Sandwiched between them, and fitting perfectly, is indeed a classic - a rendition of Frank Loesser’s I’ve Never Been In Love Before. Deliciously romantic, delicate and very much from another era, especially on Dance With You Tonight or closing track Valentine. Out on AWAL Recordings.
