This third LP by the Australian artist typifies her intelligently written, nuanced, taut, intensely performed dream pop and alt-country, packed with confessional hidden narratives and subtleties, her expressive, fragile voice with stripped back accompaniment. For all the gentleness, Jacklin’s candid, confessional can hit you in the face with killer lines that in this case, hit you full on: “Go put ice in your mouth, let them slap you about” as an example of sex advice received in her teens on Ignore Tenderness, Moviegoer is packed with vivid lines (“It opens with a wide shot / The scene is bare, dry and hot,”) and Less of a Stranger is a painfully awkward address to her mother: “Ever since I left your body /Been a breathless fast swimmer / Slow on the sand /"Will the race bend back home?" / You said you hate being alone /Did you forget the starting gun was in your hand?”, and Lydia Wears A Cross recalls the oddly empty pretence period of teenage first communion. “Eyes to the board / Thoughts to our lord / We were praying for Princess Diana / Ms. Brown was keeping score.” Viscerally honest, disarmingly subtle, these and many other tracks become increasingly powerful the more you listen, especially also the beautiful End Of A Friendship with its orchestral build, and also candidate for best track; Be Careful With Yourself; Love, Try Not To Let Go: and tales of putting on a brave face in the louder, slightly faster I Was Neon. Richly rewarding, sometimes disturbing, and beautifully crafted with candour. Out on Transgressive.
