A deliciously uplifting fifth solo LP by the American singer-songwriter and mult-instrumentalist, fusing folk, country, Americana, Afrobeat to Brazilian tropicalismo. As a banjo player too, McCalla is a member of Our Native Daughters, and explored the Black songbook for strings further with the group Carolina Chocolate Drops. First track Open The Road, immediately lifts with with sunny, sparkling African highlife guitar and drumming styles along with her soaring vocals and sometimes launch into a rock-like power. Take Me Away, and Scaled To Survive have beautifully sweet, woozy, chirping sounds with orchestral strings, I Want To Believe has a particularly gorgeous cello, but Tree has an extraordinary transition from gentle guitar plucking to a frenzy of rhythm and distorted guitar, which also returns on Tower and Love We Had. A beautiful album of storytelling and positivity, with a melting pot of influences put together with love. Joyous. Out on ANTI- Records.
