A dynamic, mesmeric collaboration as acclaimed modern classical string ensemble play career works by the Scottish experimental composer in multi-textured, polyrhythmic, interpretations, using arrangements by viola player Richard Jones. The quartet use their instruments with enormous variety, from the interlayered syncopations and beats of opener to Tuggemo, or intricate, stripped-down staccato of A Short Tribute to Teenage Fanclub, the unfolding, strange beauty Blackfriars, the slow, snivelling glissandos of Honeyed Words, to the vibrant energy of Shill, an alchemic concoction where electro-pop and classical music combine, and in the dark, slowly building Chorale where classical meets electronica. Whether the masterpiece of closing track Nautilus has the same weight and disturbing brilliance without the tuba and other brass sounds in this interpretation is a matter of taste, but overall this is a fascinating release that also makes you want to revisit Meredith’s other works, such as albums such as Varmints or Fibs. Out on Mercury KX / Universal.
