An inventive, very eclectic, enjoyably experimental seventh studio album by the Gothenburg quartet, mixing electronica, soul, pop, hip-hop and R&B with guests including Blur’s Damon Albarn and East Atlanta rapper JID. Working together since 1996 as school friends, Erik Bodin (drums and percussion), Fredrik Wallin (bass), Håkan Wirenstarnd (keyboards) and Yukimi Nagano (vocals) really mix it up on this release, starting with what feelds like cautious, slow, R&B on opener Amöban, but the pace picks up on second track Frisco. But it’s on the agile, upbeat oddball title track, with its bassy riff album truly takes off, followed by the languidly bouncy Disco Dangerous. Tumbling Dice has a beautiful soulful vocal and electronica fusion with a 90s Manchester dance music syncopated beat. Other standouts include, Gold, Glow with Damon Albarn, but perhaps best of all, the deliciously crunchy soul of Kenneth, and the Kraftwerk-ish electronica and beautifully sung melody of Lily’s Call. Eccentric, cross-genre, intricate and super groovy. Out on Ninja Tune.
