The ex-Cure drummer and the acclaimed percussionist of Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Creatures and other bands team up with the Irish producer for a wonderfully rhythmic, sharply witty, krautrock-style/synth pop-punk fusion with guest vocalists including LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie and U2’s The Edge. It is in fact Murphy’s first lead vocal on any track outside of LCD Soundsystem, with an outstanding, impassioned performance on the caustically lyrical title track, as well as closing number, Skins. Gillespie also pulls out some stops on the excellent, emotionally charged Ghosted At Home, as well as opener This Is What It Is (The Be Free). Other highlights include Starcrawler’s Arrow de Wilde with Mark Bown on Uh Oh, We Got To Move (with Isaac Brock), the droll, clever rapping and trumpeting of of Pan Amsterdam on Travel Channel, and the instrumental (on of four) track Noche Oscura featuring The Edge. But the entire album is packed with vibrant originality, a product of restless creativity in lockdown, and originally intended as an instrumental album only, but then gradually put together, no doubt with oodles of patience and swapping of electronic files across thousands of miles. This is a real triumph of bringing together different talents, glued by the energy, enthusiasm and skills of these two legendary drummers. Out on Play It Again Sam.
