A wonderfully rich, collaborative release of new music by a 12-piece group of leading UK jazz musicians including Shabaka Hutchings, recorded in 2020 in Paul Epworth’s Church Studios, inspired by and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’s landmark LP Bitches Brew. The full line-up is Benji B, Raven Bush, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia, Tom Herbert, Shabaka Hutchings, Nikolaj Torp Larsen, Dave Okumu, Nick Ramm, Dan See, Tom Skinner and Martin Terefe. That’s quite a group, with several members of, for example, Sons of Kemet involved, a cross-fertilisation of rich talent exploring a broad variety of dynamics and sounds particular on sax and woodwind, summoning many disparate elements of jazz, prog, funk and classical. Highlights include the two opening title tracks (Parts 1 and 2), which with a mind-boggling mix of rhythms and melody manages to be both funky and ghostly, former Song of the Day Miles Chases New Voodoo In The Church, which reinterpretes reinterpreting Miles Davis’ ode to Jimi Hendrix (Miles Runs the Voodoo Down), the gorgeously atmospheric Bassics, and the epic closing 12-minute track Raven Flies Back in which violin also comes to the fore. But all of it is brilliantly free-flowing and inventive, a tremendously evocative piece of work of many colours, tones, textures, moods and tempos, and perfect to inspire the imagination.
