Dynamically vaulting between fierce, explosive anger and beautiful tenderness, unabashed lust, sometimes soothing and seductive, at others biting, this is a powerful, passionate, new indie-rock LP by the band fronted by singer and guitarist Marisa Dabice, plus Kaleen Reading, Colins "Bear" Regisford, and Maxine Steen. John Congleton produces and on the thunderous opener and title track she ponders what it would be like if “Jesus himself ate my fucking snatch”. On the next, Loud Bark, which begins at a slower pace, she reaches a near-orgasmic climax with the repeated phrase, “I’ve got a loud bark, deep bite”. Nothing Like is has a softer, dreamier, shoegaze sound, while I Don’t Know You is a fabulous soft, tender gentle breeze of a track that gradually builds in emotion, a circumspect look at the person of unknown mystery: “I know 4,5,6,7 ways to get ahead /But I wouldn't know how to get you into my bed.” Sometimes is a wistful thrum of an indie number reminiscent of the late 80s or classic 90s, but before you can settle into this style, the next, the command-encouragement pleasure frenzy OK? OK! OK? OK! is crazed thrash-grunge metal mayhem. Not unlike forerunners Hole, this see-saw, hard-soft mercurial pattern of style, epitomises the album, with the as it sounds number, Soft, followed by the screaming tribute toe Dabice’s mum, Of Her, in which she declares” “She gave me her control!” Aching is a punk track, while closer Split Me Open is, ironically, perhaps the gentlest, most tender track on the album. Through all the fizzing energy and fierceness, also oddly humorous, and this heaven is certainly never dull. Out on Epitaph Records.
